DOCTORAL COLLOQUIUM

Sunday, 29August 1999

Moderated by: Sabine Timpf (timpf@geoinfo.tuwien.ac.at) and
Mark Gahegan (mark@geog.psu.edu)

The Doctoral Colloquium at COSIT is an opportunity for Ph.D. students to interact with faculty and students from other institutions. The goal is to share insights on how to do a Ph.D. in an interdisciplinary field. Each participant will briefly present his or her work, both in writing (on a single page) and orally (in 10 minutes). The presentations must address the following four points: research question, motivation, expected results, research method. The written presentations are due with the application for the Colloquium. The oral presentations at the Colloquium will be followed by a discussion among all participants. Experienced faculty will provide advice on issues such as how to pick and refine research questions, how to gather and publish research results, how to get support in the process etc. The emphasis is on methodological aspects rather than on the content of the participants' research.

To apply for participation at the Doctoral Colloquium, please send a one-page description of your Ph.D. research question, background, goal, and method to

cosit99@informatik.uni-hamburg.de

The accepted descriptions will be published on the official COSIT `99 WWW site.

Deadline for Colloquium application: 31 May 1999.

All applicants to the Colloquium will be notified by the end of June 1999.
